Recently I’ve been writing quite a bit about magic in Satanism and it’s apparent from the questions you’ve asked that you’re curious about what these terms mean to me as a Satanist since they mean other things in other religions. I’d be remiss if I didn’t explain my personal perspective in the philosophy to you fully since the goal of this blog is to clear up any misconceptions about Satanism! I thoroughly recommend giving The Satanic Bible a read for information on magic in Satanism which isn’t only my own opinion on it, but for those of you who are seeking clarification on the fundamentals and my use of the terms specifically in this blog, look no further. All right: without further ado, let’s jump into it! Click Read More to expand and use the inverse pentagram graphic to mark your spot. In this post I will cover: Who qualifies to be a witch in Satanism Lesser Magic in Satanism Enchantments / Spells / Blessings / Curses in Satanism What is a witch and/or who qualifies to be one in Satanism? ![]() A witch is a Satanist who uses magic to obtain their goals, whether it is Lesser Magic or Greater Magic. Witch is a genderless term: you do not need to be a woman to be a witch, and it doesn’t matter if you identify as having a gender. A witch is not someone who has Satan on their cellular speed dial, and they do not need to make any sort of pact with any cosmic entity in order to be a witch. In fact, the power of a Satanic witch comes from within them and not from an overshadowing deity or entity, and they do not “sell” any part of themselves (be it soul, time, prostitution, or offspring) in order to be successful. You will not know who the Satanic witches are unless they confess themselves to you because there is no uniform or lapel pin that they are required to wear. There is no code among them that demands identification to another, and no preceding set of laws or rules that must be followed by them aside from their own system of beliefs and morals. No familiars or pets are required to hold the station, though witches love pets as much as a non-witch so you may find that some do enjoy the companionship of little mascots with fur, feathers, scales, or skin! We're going to continue to dive into Lesser Magic in this post so if you'd like to learn more about Greater Magic click here! What is Lesser Magic in Satanism? Lesser Magic in Satanism more or less describes an action by an individual who goes about achieving their desires through means not exercised, noticed, or recognized by their peers. This is a very broad definition I’ve given you, and in the past I’ve clarified it to say that it’s more or less how you work with someone one on one (though it could be to a group!)—how you manipulate a situation, a person, an outcome, to be what you want it to be. It doesn’t involve wand waving or candles (unless it’s part of the ‘act’) and for me has a very high focus on people. I will use Lesser Magic on/for/upon a person in order to get what I want, and often I succeed. It’s my opinion that Lesser Magic isn’t the sort of thing that can be foiled by anyone other than the witch who is conducting it. That has plenty to do with my own “mighty principles though;” I believe in being accountable for your own mistakes and failing to account for someone else who ultimately messes with your Lesser Magic is a failure of the witch to account for the meddler. That said, I don’t believe there is a good and easy way to resist strong and effective Lesser Magic unless you happen to be a person who is very keen on being aware of everyone around you. A witch, in my opinion, is more able to protect themselves simply because they know what sorts of trickery to be on the look-out for. Lesser Magic is probably often confused with the concept of “Lower Magic” found in other belief systems, but it’s quite different in that a witch working with Lesser Magic is working on achieving results through interpersonal labor rather than trying to work with an impersonal cosmic force or deity. Deities do not exist in Satanism. We are atheists. Our success in Lesser Magic comes from our own real-world action. Petyr Baelish (from the fictional Game of Thrones series by George Martin) would be a decent example of a person who uses Lesser Magic to get what they want. What is an Enchantment / Spell / Blessing / Curse in Satanism? Another thing which I discuss in a somewhat interpretive fashion at times is the idea of a curse or enchantment. Some Satanists I know read these words and reject them completely because they reject everything about magic brought up in any conversation. That’s fine. They’re not listening, though. None of these terms have anything to do with waving a stick, inscribing on candles, or reading cards.
![]() Enchantment Enchantment in Lesser Magic is the process in which you are obtaining your target’s attention so that you can cast your spell upon them—that is, make them want to carry out your wishes all on their own. You don’t typically enchant a person with a Greater Magic ritual unless maybe you’re talking about a Lust Ritual. Enchantment is not a one-time-off deal. When you enchant someone you need to make sure that your enchantment doesn’t break, that the bewitched doesn’t become disillusioned or disenchanted with you. If someone becomes disenchanted you would lose your sway over their decision making and in personal experience it will take more energy and effort to enchant them than it will be to start on a new person. This is one of those scenarios where in most cases you want to prevent it from happening in the first place by continuing to tend to the enchantment and growing it into a powerful spell over time. Spells To be under a spell in Lesser Magic describes the state in which someone who is receptive to your efforts will find themselves. It’s the state that will encourage them to act in your interests rather than in somebody else’s. You can think of this term in a metaphorical type way. In general it strikes me that if a Satanist is under the spell of another they have relinquished control over to that other individual and this is usually a bad thing. This can sometimes be a good thing however, such as in a situation where someone needs help breaking an addiction or needs to endow another with the power to hold them responsible or accountable for something. It can also be a good thing to be under someone’s spell as a part of an ongoing trust exercise or, frankly, if that’s how you get your thrills… Blessings To receive a blessing from my perspective is what you receive when a spell brings you a positive result. Witches may bless themselves or maybe they bless others. Sometimes you may be the recipient of something which can be interpreted as both a blessing and a curse. I also define “blessed” as the state where you can receive attention or assistance from a Satanic god—and by this I mean an ordinary Satanist or Satanic witch since we recognize ourselves as gods—and benefit from that assistance and attention. We witches could I suppose, following this metaphor, bless ourselves by accommodating our own needs to facilely carry out our desires by preparing ourselves for the task ahead of time. Curse A curse is something that usually carries a negative connotation. Sometimes I interpret any sort of magic as a curse since it modifies or undermines your sense of free will, whether you realize it or not. I hold liberty in high regard for myself. I don’t like being cornered or made to do something that I don’t want to do. For this reason and in a very broad sense of its definition, any type of magic worked upon you from a Satanic witch may be considered a curse because it can change your behavior from what you otherwise would have elected to do out of free will. It may be that the witch is encouraging you to do something or if they really suck at Lesser Magic, they could be coercing you. (I say that because I would never consider a spell successful if the individual has to be coerced to do something.) Traditionally when a person thinks of Satanic magic they are picturing a malicious evildoer who works intimately with Satan to throw some sort of cosmic wad of bad-luck or misfortune at somebody. As you see, that's quite far from reality. We prefer to base ourselves in the real world and entertain our fantasy for fun, not everyday life. We are not Maleficent nor a gingerbread witch. We don't make pacts with the character "Satan," and our magic is geared towards leveling a playing field and balancing our universe in the absence of a reigning deity. We use metaphor to color our world, but we never delude ourselves by committing a firm belief in the intangible. I hope that this series has been helpful to better understand Satanic Magic! Feel free to send me any lingering questions you may have, and as always...
